Micajah in the Revolutionary War At the age of 17 Micajah enlisted in the Virginia Regiment in the Winter of 1779 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He served two years as a Private in Captains William Kirtly's and Thomas Porter's Companies, Colonel Francis Taylor Commanding. He served in the militia in 1781 where he was at the capture of Cornwallis. Some say he suffered through the terrible winter at Valley Forge with Washington. Post War In 1796 he was living in Shelby County, Kentucky, with 5 of his children. Retirement Pay On June 7, 1832, Congress passed a law that extended retirement payments to certain Revolutionary War patriots, which included Micajah. The law required certain actions by State Courts, in order to receive benefits, which included a deposition by the claimant. A remarkable hand written 3 page deposition document which was signed by Micajah, is stored in the National Archives, M804 Revolutionary War Pension and bounty Land Warrant Application Files. Since the British destroyed all US Service Files when they burned Washington in 1812, there are no documents to show the war service by Micajah. The Micajah Neal deposition is thus the best evidence of the Service of Micajah, since the deposition was accepted by the War department and Micajah received his pension (Certificate #4383 issued January 21, 1833, Rate $80 per annum, commenced on March 4, 1831). The handwriting is too eligible to read, but apparently the War Department was able to decipher the original. Later, in1840 after Micajah's death, a subsequent deposition was made by "Milly" Neal, who could not write, to claim Micajah's pension as was provided by law. Fred Millis's book states that Micajah enlisted in 1778 in Culpepper County and served as a private for two years in the Virginia troops under Captain Thomas Porter. He was at the surrender at Yorktown with our other relatives. Inquiries The Pension file contains numerous letters from people all over the United States for the next 100 years stating they are relatives and that they want copies of the Micajah Neal Pension file.
