Zeitgenosse Alexanders des Großen Cousin von Artaxerxes III. Artaxerxes III. von Persien und alle seine Söhne außer einem, Arses, wurden durch die Mordkomplotte eines Wesirs namens Bagoas getötet, der Arses als Marionettenkönig auf den Thron setzte. Als er jedoch herausfand, dass Arses nicht kontrolliert werden konnte, tötete Bagoas ihn 336 v. Chr. ebenfalls und setzte einen Mann namens Codomannus auf den Thron, den letzten überlebenden legitimen Erben des persischen Throns. Codomannus war ein entfernter Verwandter des Königshauses, der sich in einem Kampf der Helden in einem Krieg gegen die Kadusier ausgezeichnet hatte[1] und zu dieser Zeit als königlicher Kurier diente.[2] Codomannus war der Sohn von Arsames, Sohn von Ostanes, einem der Brüder von Artaxerxes, und Sisygambis, der Tochter von Artaxerxes II. Memnon. Er bestieg den Thron im Alter von 46 Jahren.
