Андрій Миколайович - український громадський діяч і етнограф, сенатор, видатний правник, голова Петербурзької судової палати, дійсний статський радник, статс-секретар імператора, кавалер ряду імператорських орденів, прославився як філантроп i музикант. Його стараниями засновано музичне товариство в Петербурзі, основною метою якого було поширення музичної освіти в Pociї. Born in Kiev, Markevitch moved with his family to Switzerland in 1914. Alfred Cortot discovered his musical ability and took him to Paris in 1926 for training as a composer and pianist, where he would study under Nadia Boulanger. He gained recognition in 1929 with the performance of his Concerto Grosso in Paris.

Markevitch made his debut as a conductor at age 18 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. As a conductor, Markevitch was well-respected for his interpretations of the French and Russian repertory (such as Tchaikovsky) and of twentieth-century music.

Markevitch's first wife was Kyra Nijinska, daughter of the great ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. She bore him a son, Vaslav Jr (b. 1936), before they divorced. His second wife was Donna Topazia Caetani, the only child of Don Michelangelo Caetani dei Duchi di Sermoneta and his wife, the former Cora Antinori, who ran the boutique of the Paris decorating firm Jansen. Their son, Oleg Caetani, was chief conductor and artistic director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia. Topazia also bore him two daughters, Allegra (b. 1950) and Nathalie (b. 1951), and another son, Timour (1960-1962).

Concert cellist Dimitry Markevitch was an honored student of Gregor Piatigorsky. His interests covered a variety of areas, including musicology, research into stylistic traditions, and teaching. He was a member of the American Musicological Society and the Société Francaise de Musicologie. He founded the Institut de Hautes Etudes Musicales (IHEM) in Switzerland.

He discovered the Westphal and Kellner manuscripts of the Bach Suites, which had eluded musicologists for decades. He published his own edition of the Bach Suites (in its 3rd edition), which incorporates these manuscripts as well as the Magdalena. In 1964 he presented his edition in recital in Carnegie Hall in New York, playing all six suites in a single concert.

He discovered two unknown works by Ludwig van Beethoven: the Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Opus 64, and the Kreutzer Sonata, transcribed for cello by Czerny. He also worked on editions of works by Mussorgsky, De Falla, Stravinsky, and Shostakovitch. Dimitry Markevitch is the author of "Cello Story", a book on the cello, its history, repertoire and famous players.

He was a pioneer in the rediscovery of "authentic" instrumental techniques, performing works composed prior to the 19th century on a baroque cello. He particularly explored the works for the unaccompanied cello and wrote a book on the subject, "The Solo Cello."
