Il fut proche du poète Taras Hryhorovytch Chevtchenko.
Il étudia le piano avec le pianiste tchèque Kotliar.
1860, il se perfectionna à Weimar du grand-duché de Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach avec Franz Liszt.
Il donna des concerts à Kiev, Moscou, Saint-Pétersbourg.

Son art fut apprécié par les compositeurs Alexandre Nikolaïevitch Serov et Alexandre Sergueïevitch Dargomyjski.
