Напомена

John Rutherford, sen. Minister of Yarrow, Selkirkshire.

The original church of the parish of Yarrow was the historic "St Mary's of the Lowes" or the "Forest Kirk", and was built about the twelfth century on the lands of Kirkstead high on the hillside overlooking St Mary's Loch. In 1640, during the stormy days of the National Covenant, the original site was abandoned, and Yarrow Kirk was built in the center of the parish.

In 1772, major reconstruction was required. there was now accommodation for 770 parishioners.

This was the kirk known to Sir Walter Scott and to James Hogg. From his home at Ashiestiel, then within the parish bounds, Scott occasionally rode over the hills to worship in what he called "the shrine of my ancestors", and to to visit the grave of his maternal great-grandfather, John Rutherford, Minister of Yarrow from 1691 to 1710, whose grave is marked by the mural tablet set in the north wall.

As worthy of special notice, there is a mural tablet in the back wall to the memory of the Rev. John Rutherford, the first minister of Yarrow after the Revolution, and ordained here in 1691. He was previously schoolmaster of Selkirk. The inscription, written by his son, one of the medical professors in the University of Edinburgh, and a pupil of the celebrated Boerhaave, is in classical Latin ; and, after a tribute to his worth in his pastoral and domestic relations, closes with these (juaint lines — ' Oh, thrice happy thou ! Thy fame is above the lofty mountains and green banks of Yarrow ; thy spirit beyond the stars.' He was maternal great-grandfather of Sir Walter Scott. It was from that side of his house the poet derived his genius ; and while residing in this parish, at Ashiestiel, he used occasionally to visit what he called ' the shrine ot his ancestors. '

But the man who ought here to be placed foremost is a man who became minister of Ettrick three years before John Rutherford, Scott's ancestor, died - Thomas Boston.

After a considerable interval, Scott, Hogg, and Leyden appear on the scene - names that will forever remain enshrined in Border song and story. Scott was a Borderer of Borderers, a descendant of Auld Wat of Harden and Mary Scott, the Flower of Yarrow. His grandfather, on the maternal side, was Professor Rutherford, a famous man in his day, the scion of an old Border stock, renowed, like the Harden family, in the annals of reiving.

...

Sir Walter Scott, greatest of the Border minstrels and best of men, was, though born in Edinburgh, closely associated with Selkirkshire, by descent on the father’s side from Wat o’ Harden and on the mother’s from the Rev. John Rutherford of Yarrow, by his official position as sheriff of the county, and by residence at Ashiesteel. The scenery, the people, the life, the history, the traditions of Selkirk and Peebles—all influenced Scott and Scott’s work. "If no country ever owed so much for its fame to one man as Scotland to Sir Walter Scott, no part of it has so earned distinction through his notice as Selkirkshire." The Minstrelsy is full of Selkirk influences, Marmion was written and Waverley was begun at Ashiesteel. Scott’s pictorial power is finely displayed in local scenes as: "Tweedside in November" (Marmion, introduction to canto i); "Yarrow" (introduction to cantos iv and v); "A Snowstorm amongst the Hills" (canto iv); and, one of the best, "St Mary’s Loch in Calm" (introduction to canto ii). His novels are full of allusions to places and persons in the shires, and two of them, St Ronan’s Well and The Black Dwarf, deal especially with the district.
